What Faith is Not For

Faith is not for replacing common sense. Far too often I’ve head lines similar to this: “Oh, I didn’t get that prestigious job I wanted…but it’s okay because it’s not in God’s plan for me!” Well, possibly if you believe in that, but more likely the person failed to impress with their resume/interview and so on and the employer found someone more suitable. Faith is not a replacement for common sense or logic. God is not an excuse to be lazy or apathetic, such as “Oh, I could look for jobs…but God will provide if it’s suitable so I won’t search online or look around for jobs.” God doesn’t conveniently drop things we want into our laps. If you believe in a higher power, chances are he’s not your own personal butler.

Faith is not for casting judgments on people you don’t know. Just because you may hold a narrow worldview does not give you the right to judge others or tell them they’re destined for an eternal afterlife of fiery torment just because you think there’s a higher power who somehow agrees with your own personal opinions of people. Chances are, this higher power doesn’t. Maybe he’s actually judging you for judging others. Karma. What goes around, comes around.

Obviously, you’re able to tell I’m talking from personal experience here. I just felt like writing it down.

  1. To modify an old comment: “Would you want to worship a God that acted so capriciously?”. Personally, I wouldn’t have much time OR patience for a supposed “Supreme Being” who randomly handed things out in SPITE of my hard work, nor one who would judge others more quickly and harshly than I would.
But we’ve already established I’m weird, right? ;)

You being weird in this case has nothing to do with it, even though everyone knows you are. ;)

You’re completely right. 105% right in fact.

I find it sad that often the people who most loudly proclaim their Christianity are those who have the most unChristlike behavior…or is that me makling a judgment call???

I wouldn’t say so. You’re making a logical observation…something many of those people seem to make few of.
