To strive, to seek, to find

Though much is taken, much abides; and though
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven; that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.
– “Ulysses” by Alfred, Lord Tennyson.

    Words as true today as when they were first written.

  2. I remember these in a speech – political, I believe, and possibly from Civil Rights’ time period. Unfortunately, I can’t remember who or exactly when.
    The last three words are the most important – “Not to yield”. We didn’t tame fire, cast bronze, take to the skies and space, without loss, sometimes very painful loss. Yet it is the will NOT to yield, that allow us to gain and progress, not just in spite of loss, but because of it.
    A great choice!

      I don’t know if you’re a Bond connoisseur as I am, but in the most recent film, “Skyfall,” M recites the end of Ulysses during her hearing with Members of Parliament.

      I couldn’t agree more with your sentiment though. Happy New Year by the by, John!
